Which Goalie?

THAT'S THE QUESTION!!

It is no secret that the Oilers are fighting for a playoff birth and a big part of it is because of the offense and, more importantly, the powerplay. I wan't to talk about something, I think, that is much more important. Goaltending! Who do you go with when it comes time to play in April, May and maybe even June!! AHHHH!

I have compared both goalies over the season and down the stretch! Both goalies have played 38 games and have been pretty healthy so I thought why not compare!

COMPARE:

These number are thanks to hockey-reference.com

As you can kinda see things seem to be pretty equal right? Goals against average is relatively the same as is the save %. So how do you pick a goalie based off of these numbers? You really can't I think. So I went and did some math (woo) since the trade deadline! Mikko has played in 5 games and Smitty has played in 4.

RECORD GAA SV%

MIKE SMITH: 2-1-1 4.09 .868

MIKKO KOSKINEN: 2-1-1 1.98 .951

For Koskinen I am not factoring in the 10 saves he made in relief vs Chicago.

Even without those you can see who the hot goalie is right now. Now to be fair, inside those bad numbers for Mike Smith he has one game vs the Jets that was fantastic where he stopped 39 of 41 in a big win for the Oilers. But since then it hasn't been amazing for the 37 year old. Both goalies have had their ups and downs sure but right now if you're Dave Tippett, start Koskinen. Smith may have the playoff experience and hey there are still 13 games left! I would still start Mikko for the majority of the rest of the season to see if he can continue to play like he has been.

WHO DO YOU GO WITH?

That's the question. That is why you clicked on this right? I say Koskinen right now but that could all change next game! Its an interesting time for the Oilers and their goalies. Let us see who can grab the reigns of the net for the rest of the season and post season!
